Cedar Nature Jewelry

Morning Moon's Cedar Jewelry Collection is based on Western Red Cedar (also known as Thuja Plicata), which has been central to the rich culture of the Coast Salish people for thousands of years.

What is the Spiritual Meaning of Cedar Nature Jewelry?

The spiritual meaning of cedar is protection, wisdom and strength. For centuries, cedar trees have been revered for their spiritual significance. Cedar is known as a powerful medicine in many cultures, celebrated for spiritual protection and its ability to heal and purify. In ancient times the cedar tree was thought to house important gods and be an entrance to higher realms. It is said to store energy and then release it for important healing. Many people believe cedar promotes peaceful thoughts and helps to interpret messages from the inner self.

The Healing Powers Of Cedar Nature Jewelry

The Healing Powers of Cedar are well documented throughout history.

Because it grows in cool, wet forests where many molds and fungi also thrive, Cedar creates its own powerful antimicrobials in its oils. These oils are a powerful medicine to repel insects, molds, fungi, bacteria and viruses. It is also believed to promote immune function and to do a host of things to keep our tissues healthy.

Cedar leaves make wonderful incense and can be used with great success in smudging for purification.

Make yourself a cup of healing cedar tea to reduce stress and inflammation:

DIRECTIONS In a small pot bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add 2 cups fresh cedar to boiling water. Boil for 10 minutes or until water becomes golden in colour. Strain tea into a small tea pot. After straining make to dispose of the cedar. Add honey to taste, but avoid sugar as it can interfere with the medicinal qualities of the cedar. Enjoy.

A Note on Cedar Trees from Morning Moon Founder, Kate

I love the cedar in our collection because it is the most perfect cedar branch I have ever come across. When I first envisioned this collection, I searched forests up and down the BC Coast for over six years to find the perfect cedar branch. I was feeling around for the tree that spoke to my heart. I knew I would know when I found it. Friends must’ve thought I was crazy - when we were out on walks together, I was steadfast about touching every cedar tree that we came across until I found the one that spoke to me.

One day I found the cedar tree that I knew would give me the collection. It spoke to me, I felt it in my heart. It asked to be made into jewelry for you, to share its gifts far and wide. And today, this is still the only tree that all the pieces in my Cedar jewelry collection come from.

“Robin Wall Kimmerer has written an extraordinary book, showing how the factual, objective approach of science can be enriched by the ancient knowledge of the indigenous people. It is the way she captures beauty that I love the most—the images of giant cedars and wild strawberries, a forest in the rain and the meadow of fragrant sweetgrass will stay with you long after you read the last page.”

Identifying Cedar Trees

There are majestic elder cedar trees that are believed to be over 1000 years old.

Cedar is a tall evergreen tree with a wide base and cinnamon coloured bark. Greenish-yellow leaves are flat lovely scales. Its intricate branches are often shaped like a “j” and have upward pointing tips. Cedar can grow up to 19 feet in diameter and up to 200 feet tall, which is almost as long as a football field!  There are majestic elder cedar trees that are believed to be over 1000 years old.

Types of Cedar Trees Found in British Columbia

There are two species of Cedar that are native to British Columbia: The Yellow Cedar and the Western Red Cedar. Yellow Cedar are smaller than Red Cedar, typically growing to 20-40 meters in height. They grow mostly in subalpine elevations along the coast from Vancouver Island to Alaska, however it is rarely found in inland regions. Red cedar in contrast, is common on both the coastal and inland areas of BC. Red Cedar grows up to 70 meters tall and can live up to 1000 years old.

The Importance of Cedar in Indigenous Cultures

Cedar is highly valued and culturally significant to many Indigenous groups. The uses for cedar are diverse and extensive and virtually every part of the tree can be used. From building material, to clothing and weaving material, to medicinal and spiritual ceremonies, Cedar can be used in all aspects of life. Because of this, it is often referred to as the “Tree of Life” in some Indigenous cultures. Along with sweetgrass, sage, and tobacco, cedar is a sacred plant, used in many (but not all) Indigenous cultures across North America.
