Facts About Maple
Maple is the common name for the genus Acer, containing around 132 species of trees and shrubs. Maples are native to Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia, with Asia having the most diversity in species. There is only one species of Acer that extends to the Southern Hemisphere.
Most species of maples are deciduous and are well known for their vibrant colours during autumn. Maples have very distinctive leaves and winged fruits called samaras, commonly referred to as “maple keys”, “helicopters”, “whirlybirds”, and “polynoses”. The distinct shape of the samaras enables the wind to spin and carry them farther away from the tree.
Maples are commonly planted as ornamental trees in gardens and cities. Collections of maple tree species are often planted in botanical gardens or arboreta. They can also be grown in miniature and are a popular choice for the art of bonsai.
The wood of maple also has many uses. Dried wood is commonly used for smoking food while maple charcoal is an integral part of making Tennessee Whiskey. Maple is also used as pulpwood, giving good bulk and opacity to paper, as well as good printing properties. The timber from larger species of maples is used for furniture, archery equipment and wooden baseball bats. Sugar maple, often referred to as “hard maple”, is used to make butcher blocks, pool cue shafts, bowling pins and bowling alley lanes.
Maple is a tonewood, and is used to make many instruments. It is commonly used to make the backs, sides, and necks of violins, violas, cellos, double basses. It is also used for the neck of electric guitars as well as for making drums and some drum sticks. It is used for bassoons and some other wind instruments as well.
Maple trees are also used for the production of maple syrup. Sugar maples are most commonly used for the manufacture of maple syrup. These trees are tapped for sap, which is then boiled down to produce syrup. About 40 litres of sap is needed to make 1 litre of maple syrup.
Maples are also major pollen producers in early spring. Before many other plants have flowered, maple trees are an important source for foraging honeybees.
